چکیده

In recent years it has become common to use stated preference (SP) discrete choice experiments (DCEs) to study and/or predict consumer demand. SP is particularly useful when revealed preference (RP) data is unobtainable or uninformative (e.g., to predict demand for a new product with an attribute not present in existing products, to value non-traded goods). The increasing use of SP data has led to a growing body of research that compares SP vs. RP demand predictions (in contexts when both are available). The present paper goes further by comparing the structure of consumer taste heterogeneity in SP vs. RP data. Our results suggest the nature of taste heterogeneity is very different: In SP data consumers are much more likely to exhibit either (i) lexicographic preferences, or (ii) “random” choice behavior. And many consumers appear to be fairly insensitive to price. This suggests that caution should be applied before using SP to answer questions about the distribution of taste heterogeneity in actual markets. JEL Codes: D12, C35, C33, C91, M31

Accommodating for Taste and Variance Heterogeneity in Discrete Choice†

Understanding and accommodating heterogeneity in variance (also referred to as heteroscedasticity) and taste has become a major area of research within discrete choice analysis. Both scale and taste heterogeneity can be specified as continuous or discrete, the latter can be associated with socio economic characteristics (i.e. observed heterogeneity) or it can be derived probabilistically (i.e. ...

Valuing indigenous cattle breeds in Kenya: An empirical comparison of stated and revealed preference value estimates

In this study we compare revealed and stated-preference approaches to value traits of cattle in Kenya. The premise is that much can be learnt about non-market values of indigenous animal genetic resources (AnGRs) from the use of multi-attribute stated-preference methods, if these compare well with revealed-preference results. The objective is to investigate the performance of choice experiments...

Combining sources of preference data

This paper brings together several research streams and concepts that have been evolving in random utility choice theory: (1) it reviews the literature on stated preference (SP) elicitation methods and introduces the concept of testing data generation process invariance across SP and revealed preference (RP) choice data sources; (2) it describes the evolution of discrete choice models within th...

How Many Types Are There?

We consider an revealed preference based method which will partition consumer microdata into an approximate minimal number of preference types such that the data are perfectly rationalisable by standard utility theory. This provides a simple, nonparametric and theory-driven way of investigating unobserved preference heterogeneity in empirical data, and easily extends to any choice model which h...

Best nonparametric bounds on demand responses

This paper uses revealed preference inequalities to provide the tightest possible (best) nonparametric bounds on predicted consumer responses to price changes using consumer-level data over a finite set of relative price changes. These responses are allowed to vary nonparametrically across the income distribution. This is achieved by combining the theory of revealed preference with the semipara...
